When it comes to the best shoe for your arch, the most important thing to get right is the category (neutral vs support). These categories do not refer to the height of the arch, but rather the way the shoe supports your stride, since running shoes do not typically have an active shape coming into the foot. Shoes that sometimes feel like the arch has a different height may actually just have a slimmer, tighter fit that hugs the arch area. It is also important to make sure you are in the correct size as your foot will sit differently in the shoe depending on how much space you have between your longest toe and the end of the shoe - we recommend about 1/2" to 1" (about a thumbnail's width) of space.
If you have a low or flat arch, then you will most likely benefit from a support shoe. If you have a high arch, then you will most likely want to lean toward a neutral model. Every foot is different though, so it is helpful to know how your foot shape impacts the way you walk and run.
There are some helpful tests you can perform at home using our Shoe Finder quiz, or a local running shop can help you identify what type of arch you have and what may work best for you. Use our Store Locator to help find some great running shops in your area that can help you identify your arch type and how it impacts your stride.
