At Brooks, we’re always learning from runners in our Run Research Lab, where our scientists and researchers continuously test new ideas to improve your running experience. One of our latest advancements is moving beyond the traditional “neutral” and “support” classifications to four distinct support categories:
These categories describe how a shoe supports your body’s natural movement. It’s important to note that this type of support is different from arch support. Performance running shoes typically do not include active arch shaping. If a shoe feels like it has a higher arch, it’s usually due to firmer cushioning or a snug fit around the arch area. For personalized arch support, consider replacing the removable Brooks insole with an orthotic or insert, available online or at most local run specialty stores.

Flexible support
FlexZone™ technology provides midfoot flexibility that helps facilitate the body’s preferred motion path. Intended to move with you, flexible support models incorporate an asymmetrical midfoot flex groove and lateral forefoot pods for dynamic movement.

Balanced support
A secure heel with a dynamic forefoot helps provide inherent stability. Our balanced support models feature classic, cushioned stability for everyday runs.

Structured support
Our GuideRails™ Technology System helps keep excess movement in check. GuideRails are two pieces of firmer foam placed on either side of the heel, creating a structured support system and easily recognized by the inclusion of “GTS” in the model name.
